OTHER ISSUES Post Bariatric Plastic Surgery Cosmetic Surgery News July 2009 - One state is trying to reduce risks associated with cosmetic surgery. A CA legislator says people should be required to have physical exams before undergoing any cosmetic surgeries. Others oppose the measure, saying that current rules governing such procedures are enough. The requirement would apply to more involved surgeries such as a brow or forehead lift or butt augmentation. Medical tests would not be required for less invasive procedures such as cosmetic laser resurfacing. June 2009 - The definition of cosmetic surgery is often expanded to include non-surgical procedures. In fact, of the millions of cosmetic procedures done each year, only about one in five involve actual surgery. The rest are procedures such as Botox injections or dermal fillers. May 2009 - How is the economy affecting the number of cosmetic procedures being done in the U.S.? Well, it depends on the type of procedure. Some numbers are down, but others are up. Surveys show that some people looking for jobs may see cosmetic procedures as a way to look younger, and thus more desirable in the marketplace. These people tend to get less invasive procedures, although some are opting for surgical correction of things like sagging jowls and droopy eyelids. But more serious procedures such as face lifts or tummy tucks are seeing a decline, as people put off elective procedures due to having less money. The cost of cosmetic surgery is not inexpensive, and obviously for someone out of work, that cost makes any consideration of such a procedure impossible. Another trend being reported is a continuation of the increase in the number of men opting for cosmetic surgeries and procedures. April 2009 - According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, consumer beware. Anyone considering cosmetic surgery should make sure that a board certified cosmetic surgeon is doing the procedure. This follows reports of silicone injections gone horribly wrong in NYC. Silicone is used in procedures such as breast augmentation and butt augmentation, but in this case an unqualified person was injecting the material directly into thighs and hips. There have also been reports of poor outcomes when unlicensed cosmetologists injecting materials at their homes. For more news on cosmetic surgery, see Cosmetic Surgery News |
